This task requires students to read multisyllabic words containing the or letter combination. Students are not asked to identify the letter combination or its sound before reading the word.
This is the first task in which students will read -VCe pattern words (in a serif font) in which the vowel that changes its sound is u. These examples are more challenging than cases with a, i, or o because the u can make one of two sounds in -VCe pattern words: /ū/ as in cube or /ꝏ/ as in tube.
