This task requires students to read words that contain the wh- letter combination and that are also -VCe pattern words (though not all of the words in this task are -VCe pattern words). Students are not asked to identify the letter combination or its sound before reading the word.
This task introduces what is called the minor sound of the letter c. That’s when c makes the /s/ sound (instead of /k/) when it’s followed by e, i, or y.
The new passage in this task is the first one to appear in a serif font.
