When we say to read the sounds that letters “usually make,” we are saying to read the vowels’ “short” sounds, in other words /ă/, /ĕ/, /ĭ/, /ŏ/, and /ŭ/.
This is the first task in which students read -VCe pattern words in a serif font without seeing them in the specialized orthography first. At this point though, the instructor reads each word aloud first.
