Understanding the Georgia Early Literacy Act

Last week I delivered a series of webinars on Georgia’s recently passed HB 538, the Georgia Early Literacy Act. With this legislation, whose stated purpose is to enable all students to read on grade level by the end of third grade, and which mandates the early identification of, and intensive reading intervention for, K-3 students who need extra supports, Georgia joins over 30 other states in adopting the science of reading across all of its school districts. Compared to legislation in many other states, Georgia’s bill, which passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, is particularly comprehensive.

We’re grateful to the dozens of Georgia district administrators who took time out of their busy days to join us in this conversation. We’re publishing the recorded version to help any other Georgia administrators who want to better understand this new law and learn about methods to meet its mandates.

We look forward to supporting districts across the great state of Georgia in the months and years ahead!
